Imagine waking up in Lisbon, opening your laptop, finishing your work by noon, and then spending the afternoon exploring the city. No office. No traffic on the Outer Ring Road. Just you, your laptop, and the world.

This is not a fantasy anymore. It is the daily life of thousands of Indian professionals who have discovered the Digital Nomad Visa — and in this guide we are going to explain exactly what it is, which countries accept Indian passport holders, and how to apply step by step.

At BuildMyTrip, we are seeing a growing number of young professionals from Hyderabad asking us about long-stay travel options abroad. This blog is our complete answer.

What is a Digital Nomad Visa?

A Digital Nomad Visa — also called a Remote Work Visa or Freelancer Visa — is a special residence permit that allows remote workers, freelancers, and self-employed professionals to live legally in a foreign country while continuing to work for employers or clients based outside that country.

Think of it this way — you work for a company in Hyderabad or serve international clients online. Instead of sitting in your apartment or office in India, you live in Spain, Portugal or Thailand for one to two years while doing the exact same work. That is what a Digital Nomad Visa makes possible.

Unlike a tourist visa, a Digital Nomad Visa explicitly authorises remote work activity and typically grants six to twenty-four months of legal residency. As of 2026, over sixty countries offer Digital Nomad Visa programs, and the number keeps growing every year.

Who Can Apply for a Digital Nomad Visa?

You are a good candidate for a Digital Nomad Visa if you work remotely for an Indian or international company and your employer allows you to work from anywhere. Or if you are a freelancer with regular clients outside the country you want to live in. Or if you run an online business that earns money from customers abroad. Or if you are a consultant, designer, developer, writer, or any professional whose work happens entirely on a laptop.

The golden rule is simple — your income must come from outside the country you want to live in. You are not competing with local workers. You are bringing foreign income into their economy. That is why governments love digital nomads and keep creating these programs.

Countries That Accept Indian Passport Holders in 2026

Not every country accepts Indian passports easily for long-stay visas. Here are the best options specifically researched for Indian passport holders.

Portugal is the most popular European Digital Nomad Visa destination for Indians. The D7 visa requires a minimum monthly income of approximately ₹64,000 (around €760). The visa is valid for one year and can be renewed for up to five years. After five years you can apply for permanent residency and eventually Portuguese citizenship. Processing time is four to eight weeks. You apply at the Portuguese consulate in Mumbai, Delhi or Chennai. Portugal offers excellent internet connectivity, a warm climate, widely spoken English especially in Lisbon and Porto, and costs significantly less than Western European countries like France or Germany.

Spain has become extremely attractive after its 2023 Startup Act introduced a streamlined Digital Nomad Visa with a remarkable tax advantage. For the first five years, qualifying nomads pay a flat tax rate only on Spanish-sourced income. If your clients are all in India or internationally, you effectively pay very little tax on that income in Spain. The income requirement is approximately ₹2.4 lakh per month. The visa starts at one year and can be renewed to permanent residency after five years.

Thailand is one of the most practical Digital Nomad options for Indians given its proximity, affordable cost of living and familiarity for Indian travellers. The Destination Thailand Visa requires proof of savings of approximately ₹42 lakh or equivalent income and allows stays of up to 180 days per entry. Bangkok and Chiang Mai offer excellent infrastructure, fast internet and a very affordable lifestyle for Indians.

Dubai is the most popular choice among Indian digital nomads because of its proximity to India, massive Indian community, and zero personal income tax. The Dubai Virtual Working Program requires a minimum monthly income of USD 5,000 (approximately ₹4.2 lakh) and the visa is valid for one year.

Malaysia's DE Rantau Digital Nomad Program requires a minimum annual income of USD 24,000 (approximately ₹20 lakh per year). Kuala Lumpur offers excellent internet connectivity, modern infrastructure, and a very familiar cultural environment for Indians at a significantly lower cost of living than Dubai or European cities.

Estonia launched the world's first official Digital Nomad Visa in 2020. As a European Union country, holding an Estonian Digital Nomad Visa allows you to travel across the entire Schengen Area freely. The income requirement is approximately €3,504 per month and processing takes around 30 days.

Croatia offers one year of legal residency with complete exemption from Croatian income tax on foreign earnings — you only pay taxes in India. The income requirement is approximately ₹2.3 lakh per month and the visa application itself is completely free of charge. Croatia's Adriatic coastline makes it one of the most visually stunning digital nomad destinations in Europe.

The Republic of Georgia allows Indian citizens to stay for up to one year without any visa at all. There is no income requirement and no formal application process. Tbilisi has become one of the most popular digital nomad cities in the world with very affordable living costs and excellent internet connectivity. This is the easiest option for any Indian professional wanting to try the digital nomad life.

Indonesia's Bali has been a digital nomad hub for years and the country formalised its Remote Work Visa in 2023. The cost of living in Bali is very low, the natural beauty is exceptional, and the Indian community there is large and welcoming.

For those who want maximum affordability, Colombia requires a minimum monthly income of just USD 750 (approximately ₹63,000) and Barbados requires USD 1,500 per month with zero income tax on foreign earnings. Both are excellent options for freelancers and early-stage remote workers.

What Documents Do You Need?

While requirements vary by country, most Digital Nomad Visa applications require a valid Indian passport with at least 12 months validity remaining. You will need proof of remote employment — this could be your employment contract clearly stating you can work from anywhere, or freelance contracts and invoices if you are self-employed. Bank statements showing consistent income for three to six months are usually required along with proof of health insurance valid in the destination country. A clean criminal background check from Indian authorities and proof of accommodation for your first few weeks complete the typical document list.

Tax Implications for Indian Digital Nomads

This is the section most people skip and regret later. If you stay outside India for more than 182 days in a financial year, you become a Non-Resident Indian for tax purposes. As an NRI you only pay Indian income tax on income earned in India — income from foreign clients or employers is generally not taxable in India.

However you may owe taxes in your host country depending on how long you stay there. Countries like Croatia, Barbados, Georgia and Malaysia offer full exemption from local income tax on foreign earnings. Spain offers a special flat tax rate for the first five years. Always consult a Chartered Accountant familiar with international taxation before committing to any destination for more than six months. The upfront cost of that advice is always worth it.

How Much Does It Cost to Live as a Digital Nomad?

Here is a realistic monthly budget for Indian digital nomads including rent, food and transport. Georgia — Tbilisi is the most affordable at ₹60,000 to ₹90,000 per month. Thailand — Chiang Mai costs ₹80,000 to ₹1,20,000 per month. Malaysia — Kuala Lumpur is ₹90,000 to ₹1,30,000 per month. Portugal — Lisbon costs ₹1,50,000 to ₹2,20,000 per month. Spain — Barcelona is ₹1,80,000 to ₹2,50,000 per month. Dubai is the most expensive at ₹2,50,000 to ₹3,50,000 per month.
